Hi all,

As the subject states, I am looking to upgrade the RAM 3GB of 1066MHz DDR3 SODIMM to maximum capacity of 8GB itself.

I have several questions, having searched the interwebs and this forum too,

1) The user guide has an entry like, if your chipset is Mobile Intel GL40 Express, then the RAM limit is only 4GB.

I went to the Device Manager, and looked under System devices to find a list, but nowhere did I find GL40 Express. But I did find "HM55 Express chipset LPC Interface Controller - xxxx" & about 4 entries like "5 Series/3400 Series Chipset Family xxxxxxx - xxxx ".

So, Am I right to assume I can have upto 8GB? And how to know my chipset precisely?

2) I understand that using a higher freq RAM or mixing difference freqs, may or may not work [one has to match frequency, CAS latency, timings & voltage - Source: http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2010/07/what-are-the-rules-on-mixing-two-different-types-of-ram/] and so the best solution is to get the RAM with the same frequency as I have now.

If so, how do I know the different parameters of my current RAM? I know the model number of the current one and I looked it up, it tells me the freq is 1066MHz & SODIMM & PC3-8500 but not the CAS latency, timings or voltage. So, I am not sure how do I go about buying the new one? what specs to look for?

If its otherwise, If I can actually make RAMs with higher frequencies work, please let me know how?

Please let me know if there any other information you need to guide me.

Hi Smorizio,

Thank you so much for the suggestion. However, I am based out of India and there are no crucial stores here nor is it available with any 3rd party vendors. So, I believe other models with the same specs as suggested by Crucial should do?

Thanks!

Hello,

1) As per your research you might have HM55 Express chipset. However, if you still want to be sure about that then try installing CPU-Z (click here) and check the mainboard tab, it should clear that for you. Crucial scan doesn't say which Chipset your laptop has. So based on that you can make your decision on upgrading.

2) Yes, you are right. When upgrading the memory you should try to match the memory speed, the CAS latency, timings and voltage etc, the important ones to consider are the memory speed, voltage and of course the memory size (because you do want to install a 8GB module in a slot when your laptop supports only upto 4GB per slot). CL is important but you can ignore that because the memory will automatically run at the highest CL of the two memory.

And Yes, even you can mix higher frequencies (SPEED) memory with lower, the downside of this is, both, the higher and lower speed will run at the lowest speed of the memory that is installed in the system, so you won't be able to utilize the higher speeds to its limits. I do not know if this site provides shipping to India, (others I use are crucial and Kingston, if you are wondering) or you can use that info and search in eBay, Amazon etc.

Hope that answers your questions.
