Hey guys. I've got all of my PC components laying infront of me, except for a PSU, because I'm unsure how much W it should deliver.

What I got:

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97X-UD5H
CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K
GPU: GTX 690
RAM: GSkill 2x4GB
Internal HDD: WD Black 1TB
Internal SSD: Crucial M550 128GB

- I am going to OC CPU, and GPU, + I'll add a very high-end liquid cooling and a very high-end fan cooling.

What power supply is recommended?

Solution

There are plenty of good cases for water cooling the nzxt phantom 630 is a great case for that watch some reviews on you tube and decide yourself what is best for you and then to confirm you can post here.

Here is Guru3D's power supply recommendation:

GeForce GTX 690 - On your average system the card requires you to have a 750 Watt power supply unit.
GeForce GTX 690 SLI - On your average system the cards require you to have a 950 Watt power supply unit as minimum.

If you are going to overclock the GPU or processor, then we do recommend you purchase something with some more stamina.

The Seasonic X-850 would be my 1st choice, followed by the Corsair HX 850 and EVGA G2 850

What do you mean by very high end liquid cooling ? Are we spending $1,000 + here ?

If this is ya 1st time, I'd start off with a swiftech H240-X and add the rest later.

As for fans ... best performance / noise ratio belongs tot he Phanteks SP140s

Thanks, I'll go for 850 then, as both of you are mentioning. Well, we aint talking money at all. Get me right; the cooling need to be spot on perfect, but my experience is telling me, that it won't be 1000USD+, atleast not if I'm looking for secondhand cooling components

Jack, I in fact just got into Toms to ask about that. I simply have no clue. I'd like to hear what case, people would recommend, keeping in mind it needs to give as good cooling, as possibble, and money isnt the big issue.

If money isn't a big issue then sky is the limit :)

True that :) But I don't want to waste them on a shit case for then replacing it, you know what I mean?

ya gotta give me an idea on what ya wanna do .... you wanna use an all-in-one and have an easy 1st time around or you wanna do something like this ?

I'll do the AIO solution and come back if I guessed wrong.

1. First thing we need to know is what you will be water cooling ? CPU +GPU ?

2. If it's the CPU only, then I'd simply do a Swiftech H220-X and be done with it..... it kicks tail on every other cooler out there and it flat out embarrasses every CLC on the market.

http://www.hitechlegion.com/reviews/cooling/liquid/40870-swiftech-h220-x-open-loop-240mm-cpu-cooler-review?showall=&start=3

10 minutes and its installed.

3. Now you can do this and get comfy with it for a while, but unlike the CLC's, if you want to later on add the GFX card, you can easily do so..... just "open the loop". If adding the GFX card(s), I'd go for an H240-X for the extra cooling

4. First we need to know exactly what 690 you have and whether you can get a Water Block for it.
http://www.coolingconfigurator.com/

For ther nVidia reference design, it's this
EK-FC690 GTX [3831109856529]

I didn't think I'd fine one still for sale anywhere and I found only one and it wasn't EK.... ya might wanna think about selling that 690 and grabbing two 970s as stuff for this card will be hard to find
http://www.performance-pcs.com/new-aquacomputer-aquagrafx-gtx-690-g1-4.html

5. Now ya just need another radiator, some 3/8" ID (1/2" OD) black PVC tube from Swiftech site along with their MCP Pump adapter, 4 barb fittings and 4 clamps.... your done

6. I used to have 3 or 4 cases when users asked me to do a build in various price ranges.... that list has gotten small

The Phanteks cases have a real big edge on the water cooling....if using the swiftech and 1 card, I'd use the Luxe..... with two cards, I'd ant the Primo

God damnit man. That amount of effort, you put in, to help people. I got to say it is really greatly appriciated. Can't navigate much around in here, isn't there a way for me to give you some bonus points because of your work?

- Well now about the talk. No, I'm not looking for anything, visually nice. I don't care about if it looks great or ****. What I care, is perfomance, nothing else. Awesome links you've linked, videos, etc. They're helping me out getting a greater understanding on the topic of liquid cooling. And yes, when I liquid cool, I want to liquid cool CPU and GPU. And I want it to be a first build - but the last too, so if it's going to give me top notch cooling, I can't be more satisfied. - I'll now look deeper into your tips and links. Thank you very very much.

Building computers started out as a business necessity .... CAD back 20+ years ago was notoriously slow and I started modifying / building my own back then.... fortunately, great CAD boxes make great gaming boxes so after my kids were born, that became something for us to do together. As they grew, and had their own boxes, building puters became one of the few things we could do together. While I was building for friends and colleagues, we than started building for their friends, school chums and neighborhood kids. Our goal is to "never have a repeat customer". Well not customer in the literal sense as we don't charge any money for our efforts, but rather than build for them, we teach them how to build their own .... hopefully when they have their own kids, they will experience the joys of father and child doing something together .... thatz a thing that gets rare as a kid enters their teenage years :)

If your in the NYC area, your welcome to comeout to Long Island and use our test bench .... or what my wife likes to call the dining room table :)

So if ya wanna "pay back", the only thing that I'll ask is that ya "pay it forward"..... when you get done, you'll have the experience and you will be able to pass on what you learned to someone else.

Well ..... that's a quandry because we don't get out of water cooling what we used to. On a CPU, moving from a top end air cooler to a custom water loop might get ya as little as 0.1 - 0.2 GHz. With a 970.... those buggers break 1567 MHz boost clocks on frakin air at 65C ! Water cooling will help some more than others.... Asus for example doesn't provide any direct cooling for most of their PCB components so ya should be able to squeak up close to the MSI and Gigabytes there.

What ya will get is lower noise.... the system pictured above is dead silent while running stress tests, close ya eyes, ya can't tell it's on. That's the big draw for me with water.

Man.. You're really really really kind. Too bad, that I'm on the other side of the globe - Denmark. I really like how you help out people - neighbourhood kids and stuff, really awesome man. Great humanity or what you call it in the US. One day I might grow up to have kids, who knows :) Well your knowledgde helped me alot on the liquid cooling subject. I got a bigger understanding, and knowing too now. Thanks alot.

- And yes, the silence of a PC is golden, no doubt. I might just buy aftermarket coolers for my case and CPU, and then later on add liquid cooling. :)

The H220-X would be ideal for that

Well, I'm first going to OC, the second I got liquid cooling. Without OC and liquid cooling, wouldn't a 800 watt psu be enough for this rig? At the time when I'll OC and liquid cool, I can always buy a new PSU.
