Hey guys, I keep kicking the can down the road! My BIOS has failed me for the last time! I want to replace the motherboard/CPU/RAM and salvage the rest. Still love my computer, just the RAMS always been finicky.

Activities: Internet/Youtube, Video Editing, Gaming (Mainly)

Budget: <$600

Replace:
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz (4CPUs)
8192MB RAM (DDR2 SDRAM 240 pin DIMM)

Salvage:
AMD Radeon HD 7850 2gb; 1680 x 1050 (32bit)(60Hz)
Crucial M4 256GB SSD
500GB Hard Drive

What's some of my best options here?

750W is used for Crossfire and great quality, Xeon provides i7 performance at i5s cost.

If you can't afford that then I'll make some adjustments.

Hey dude that's an awesome suggestion! Great start for possibilities.

Question though why would I scrap the 7850 card? The video card upgrade seems minor, according to here http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R7-265-vs-Radeon-HD-7850, and I'm spending $130 more and throwing away a perfectly good $130 card, which has been doing a bang up job so far.

Also, I forgot to mention, I stream to my tv a lot with an HDMI cable, movies mostly, if that has any factor.

Oh I see. This looks good, I think I will get this! Thanks mate!

Any further instructions I need, say for setting up the BIOS, RAM/Power settings etc, or is it simply plug it in, install software/drivers and let it purr?

Plug and play ;)

I asked a buddy about this setup, he doesn't like crossfires much, says not all games configured for it.

Wouldn't it be better, to just forgo the power supply and card, and get the GeForce GTX 970 instead, so I'd be +$160 more, but it'd be better performance overall, right?

Your buddy is 100% spot on , The only reason I didn't recommend a 970/R9 290 is because you seemed to like your current card.

The same setup with a higher end card.

If you want to replace the R9 290 with the GTX 970 its up to you .

The 970 is better and consumes less power however its about 80 bucks more expensive.
