I am looking to begin building my first gaming PC. I was at first going to upgrade my Dell Optiplex 330 which is running linux mint currently but now I decided to start fresh with a brand new design. I have been looking on pc part picker and new egg, fry's electronics for good hardware components. I want to keep this project at a reasonable cost below $600 or near a cost of a Xbox one since that is what I am replacing and really wasn't enough games for me to have that console I paid $499 for. I played mainly Halo, NBA 2K and titanfall and a bit of Call of Duty Ghost and all of those are on PC besides Halo 4. As well if any of yall have new shooter game recommendations I would like those too. Now to the processor I want to run at least a quad core that has 3.2 ghz or more and 8 GB Ram, maybe a micro atx motherboard. Run a 500-750 GB hard drive, I don't feel I need a 1 TB because most of that space won't even be touched. I want a non costly case but that delivers style and good airflow and have a good cooling source. Can some of Ya recommend some builds you may have used or considered and even if we can go to $600 top price that would be real great.

Hey Trey,

You made a good decision in my opinion! I was in your position about 4 months ago so I figured I'd ask for a little more info and give a little and then I can show you what I ended up going with.
1. Do you have a decent monitor and other peripherals already? I think a good monitor and a decent pair of headphones is essential if you want to get the most out of this build.
2. I guarantee you will touch that extra space on the HDD in future, plus there is a very tiny difference in price between a 1tb and a 750/500gb HDD so you should go with a 1tb.
3. There are some amazing FPS experiences on PC, but I wouldn't worry too much about that while building the PC, as a $600 machine should be able to run everything out there on high...

3. There are some amazing FPS experiences on PC, but I wouldn't worry too much about that while building the PC, as a $600 machine should be able to run everything out there on high settings at around 60fps at 1080p. Many great games (like csgo, a big favourite) do not need that level of horsepower.
4. The smaller you go in terms of form factor the more expensive it becomes to get good parts. For example, an am3+ mobo for 70 euro in the matx factor will probably have a worse chipset than one on the atx form factor. Just a thought, if size isn't essential maybe going full sized atx is good for the first time. Having the extra space to work in is nice too.
