CPU only using 1 core?

A few days ago games on my PC started stuttering and crashing. Was checking temps with CoreTemp and noticed my CPU core #0 was nearly maxed out but the other 7 cores are not really being used. Temps also went up quite a bit even at idle, they used to be about 15c idle and now they bounce around from 25-35c. Can't figure out why I'm only using 1 core, any ideas?

ran fine up untill yesterday? then i would be looking at infrctions.
try running malware bytes and see if it finds anything...
also get hijack this and make a log... post the results...

I noticed it first with Terraria, I would think my CPU could run Terraria fine with just 1 core since it's not a demanding game at all. Today I tried BF4 and GRID Autosport and they were both stuttering/lagging to the point of being unplayable. All the games have always ran fine until yesterday so I'm not sure what has changed. All the cores are showing up in performance monitor and CPU-Z and are being used a little but while gaming the first core is at 100% usage and the other 7 cores are at 5-15%.

There was a program running in the background, I forget the name now but it was malicious and using a great deal of my CPU. After many attempts to uninstall I finally figured it out. Must have been installed in another program I downloaded recently
