PC freezing after R9 290 upgrade (Windows Event ID 20)

I've recently upgraded my PC to an FX-8350, R9 290 and TX-650M. Full specs are:

FX-8350 @ stock
Corsair H60
GA-78LMT-USB3
2x 4 GB HyperX Fury
XFX R9 290 DD
Corsair TX-650M
Phenom M (w/ 4 fans)

Previous specs where an FX-6300, R9 270 and CX-500M.

But I'm facing an issue: it freezes then reboots randomly. No BSOD, no artifacts, no video loss, nothing. It just completely freezes for a couple of seconds then reboots. It's very similar to what happens when you have an unstable OC.

It doesn't happen under fixed intervals, it's completely random. I've had this happen while idle, when only browsing the web. It happened seconds after booting the machine and also after about an hour playing Battlefield 4. It doesn't matter if the machine is idle or under full load. The reboots can stop happening for a couple days and then happen again.

I managed to play games for hours with no issues, namely Assetto Corsa and Crysis 3. But then it freezes while doing nothing or playing another game. It's very random.

The error I repeatedly see in the event logger is this one:

Event ID 20 - WHEA-Logger
A fatal hardware error has occurred.
Component: AMD Northbridge
Error Source: Machine Check Exception
Error Type: HyperTransport Watchdog Timeout Error
Processor APIC ID: 0
The details view of this entry contains further information.

The weirdest thing is, I can run stress tests for many, many hours with no errors or stability issues. I ran 2 hours of Prime95 alongside InterlBurnTest. Then 4 hours of IntelBurnTest alongside OCCT GPU test. 2 hours of OCCT CPU test, 4 hours of OCCT Linpack test, 4 hours of OCCT GPU test alone, and finally 2 hours of OCCT Power Supply test.

Temperatures when idle are ~30°C for the CPU when idle, but it reached 70°C at some point during the stress tests. The GPU runs at ~35°C when idle, reaching slightly under 80°C during OCCT PSU test. The weather is 36°C as we speak (I live in Brazil).

I don't think RAM or motherboard are an issue, since everything worked fine before the upgrade.

Everything is at stocks settings, no OC, no changed fan speeds or voltages. I've tried cleaning old Catalyst drivers with DDU in safe mode, and also tried reseating the GPU. No luck.

I'm running out of ideas. I thought about sending the graphics card for RMA, but I'm afraid they will just send it back since there are no issues during heavy stress tests.

Thanks for the replies guys.

It's unfortunately not an option. I need a micro-ATX board in order to fit my case, and the Gigabyte was the best one I could find (only one w/ cooled VRMs) for the FX-8350 with this form factor.

Since I use this machine in the living room, I'd rather go Intel than purchase a bulkier case.

Yes. Rev 5.0 running latest BIOS version.

I'm not sure if I can double post like this, but I think I have a clue of what's going on. rockie_'s reply pointed me in the right direction.

I just had another freeze problem now. I opened the case and touched the north bridge heatsink. It was really, really hot. I couldn't keep my finger on it for even a second.

What should I do? I think I'll try changing the thermal paste of the chipset. If that doesn't work, I'm afraid I won't have an option other than going Intel.

HWMonitor is showing good temperatures for the CPU and GPU. But I'm not sure if it's accurate with the NB at all. I only see 3 temperatures (TMPID 0-3), all of them below 55°C. I don't think the NB is below 55°C since it's clearly overheating (I never touched a NB heatsink this hot before).

As for the airflow, I'm doing the best I can with the Phenom M. I have 2 intake fans, 2 exhaust fans and the H60 fan blowing the radiator (all 120mm fans), following Bitfenix's recommendation.

Unfortunately there's only so much one can do with a case this compact. I have a small living room and this case was a godsend to fit my limited space. I spent 3 years away from PC gaming because I couldn't find something that would fit the limited space in my apartment, other than a console.

Do you think changing the thermal paste of the chipset to an MX-4 would help?

I tried changing the thermal paste of the southbridge, northbridge, CPU and GPU to the MX-4. Still no luck, the PC still freezes and reboots randomly and the chipset's heatsink gets incredibly hot.

I've ordered an i5-4670 w/ a GA-Z87M-D3H board, and will put the FX-8350 for sale. I really hope that solves the issue.
