I just put together a Windows7-Pro system that I use only for Battlefield 4/3:

Powercolor R9 290X
intel 4690k (not over clocked...yet)
A pair of Skill RipJaws DDR3-2400 8G sticks
1KW Rosewill PSU
ASRock Z97 Extreme6 MOBO
7-fans, 3output and 4 input

The system crashes at 99C...ask me how I know...
The ASRock utilites tell me that the CPU runs 37C at idle.
When I start up BF4, the temps soar up to 90-95C.

I did the rookie thing and applied too much thermal paste, and just completed cleaning it all up.
Still the temp is running 96C as I speak. I know this isn't normal but I don't know what else to do other than go with some exotic third party cooling. Any thoughts? Ideas?

Not normal. Check that the 4 push pin feet on the stock cooler (?) are all the way in the holes. Sometimes they don't open correctly behind the MB. See if the black post has opened the white fingers correctly. It sounds like the cooler is not sitting tight to the CPU.

@ papaToad
Too much thermal paste might be interfering with cooling the cpu. I would suggest taking off the cpu and applying right amount of thermal paste and reinstall the cpu. Hopefully this would solve your problem :)
