Hey guys, so recently my mom gave me her old work desktop. It doesn't work, and I'm pretty sure its the hard drive. Anyways, i really want to play some games that i can't currently because i have a mac. I want to play space engineers and maybe start citizen when it comes out. The dell vostro 200 has a lga775 socket and I think it supports ddr2 ram. Im most likely to upgrade the cpu, gpu, and ram. Any ideas on how to do this? Please help! I need answers ASAP.

This is the best I could do ($280):

Do you have a budget I can work around?

Hopefully, to run those games with medium settings. Price range around $250. If its cheaper, my local best buy sells nvidia graphics cards, up to the 760. Not the custom cooled ones by other companies. They also have the evga 750ti. They also have up to the xfx r9 270x.

You see, the problem is the motherboard socket is so old, getting a new GPU wouldn't benefit you much since the PCI lanes are probably really outdated and have a small amount of transferable bandwidth. Is it possible you can take this up to $350 and upgrade everything to the newest and most current hardware? If you are not able to do this, there is not much I can do other than say buy a slightly more powerful PSU and buy any card below and including the R9 280.

Just put all this in your Vostro case. As you can see, the CPU is not a quad core but can be easily upgraded to one. If you want a quad core processor then you are gonna have to put in a lot more money (Around $150). But if you are aiming at Medium settings this will get you to around high on almost any game but the more demanding ones (Crysis 3, 2033, Star Citizen, etc...).

I strongly urge you to save up and buy the one I have listed above. Really, it will be well worth it. But if $280
is still too much, here are some upgrades for your current system:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16Ghz Dual-Core Processor ($54.95 @ Amazon)
Storage: Hitachi Ultrastar 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($42.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: XFX Radeon R7 260X 1GB Core Edition Video Card ($99.99 @ Newegg)

Again, please, consider going with the first build. You will have much easier upgrading for the years too come, higher performance, and current hardware.

Good luck and if you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
