I was going to buy a pc, but i am now looking at Macs. I would just get the iMac without any thinking but i am going to have to sell my macbook air (Mid 2011) to help go towards that. Should i get the dual core macbook pro with an i7 and 8gb of RAM, or is it not worth giving up the two extra cores. I will be doing some light video editing, and maybe some gaming. Should I choose portability or extra cores?

For gaming the graphics card on those computers is going to make a bigger difference than the CPU. Most games still run decently well on a dual core system, but there are a few titles that do fare better with a quad core eg. Battlefield 3 and 4 or Crysis 3. Suffice it to say, you aren't going to have a good time if these Macs only have Intel integrated graphics. Nvidia mobile GPUs are better, but if its something like the GT 640m, you're still not going to have the greatest experience unless you're playing games with very modest system requirements.

Unfortunately you have to pay through the nose to get a Mac with a decent graphics card, so if you're looking at doing heavy gaming, you might want to reconsider getting a Mac.

What is more important to you, portability or better performance? Noone but you can aswer that question.

Personally, I'd go with the portable one. But I'd never get to the idea of rendering/gaming on a laptop.
If I wanted the best performance, I'd look into desktop pc's.

I actually have looked into PCs,but that's not what i want. So basically what I'm saying is how much difference is there performance wise

So that means there is not much performance difference? Or there is a lot of difference?

Unless he would consider getting a new Mac Pro. But then again they are uber expensive. But they are made of workstation grade parts.
