Hello, first post here, I'm usualy a lurker (not a regular one), I usualy find the information by myself, but this time I'm helpless. I'm suspecting it's a video card problem, but can't be realy sure.

Here is the problem:

At random moments, my display freeze. All sound still plays, my skype or Mumble conversations still works (with push to talk) and my mouse still moves and change depending on if I'm over a text field for example. It does happen often. It happens in games or even outside of games, it already has happened when the computer was idle during the night. The only way out of it is to hard reset my computer.

Yesterday I was in league of legends champion selection screen, the screen froze as usual, but I clicked where one champion was. Nothing did actualize, but I heard the voice of the champion as if I selected it. It started happening 2-3 months ago, but maybe one month ago, I formatted my computer and the problem persist. I'm suspecting it's a hardware issue, but it's strange.

General information regarding my video card, at one point it started overheating, I replaced the heatsink and now it's working fine. Maybe that's what started everything.

Here is my rig:

  • CPU: Intel i7 970
    Mobo: Asus Sabertooth X58
    Memory: Gskills 2GB x6 F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ (12 GB)
    GPU: Powercolor Radeon 7850
    SSD: Intel X25-M (2nd gen)
Sound Card: Creative X-FI Titanium HD
    OS : Windows 8.1 Pro
Cooling:

  • CPU: Antec Kuhler H2O 92
GPU: Arctic cooling Accelero L2 Plus

Since I installed my new GPU heatsync, I once started Furmark for a whole night, nothing went wrong. My CPU temperature never goes over 60C.

Tell me more about how can I help you help me! :)

UPDATE 1 :
Today it crashed again, but I tried to connect remotely with my laptop to see what it will do. When I tried to do that, the connexion didn't work (was always trying on my laptop side), the sound changed on my desktop, I was talking to a work collegue and his voice became echo. I was sharing my desktop with him at the same time. and he was seeing exactly the same thing as me which is a frozen image with a cursor that moves.

UPDATE 2 :
Yesterday I realised that my motherboard's firmware wasn't up to date, I did the update and now I'm waiting to see if the problem still occur.

I did some more research and read this thread on answers.microsoft.com. I'm begining to suspect it's a Windows 8.1 related problem. I can't remember exactly when the problem started, so I can't say it started when I did the upgrade though. My windows updates settings are at "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them" and my computer never goes to sleep.

UPDATE 3 :
Now that my motherboard firmware is updated, it did happened again unfortunately so this is not the issue. A few more information concerning the drivers, I update my video card drivers as soon as they are available. When I formatted my computer though I downloaded the last version of every drivers, so I wouldn't think this is the problem.

This issue is about 90% video card is bad with a 10% divided between power supply, maybe RAM. If your case cooling and the heatsink on the card are setup properly that is. If not, it may still be overheating.

When it started overheating, it started doing small amounts of damage which eventually leads to these crashes you are seeing. First check the card in another system that can run it properly (power supply is good enough), if you run it for a while there with no issues, start to check the RAM, since you have 6 2gig sticks, try running with two of them at a time and see what happens.

I'd put more than even money on the issue following the card to a new computer unless your case has cooling issues in which case a new system with better cooling would not have issues.
