GPU, thermal paste, pads: concerned about the heatsink fit

The NVidia GPU in my laptop (old MSI Megabook) gets very hot.
1. Is it a good idea to replace the thermal pads with paste (eg Arctic Silver, after carefully cleaning the surfaces)?
2. One concern: there are actually 6 chips in contact with the pads. I wonder whether, with paste, it will be hard to make sure that all of them will be in proper contact with the heatsink. In other words, small variations in the height of the chips might reduce contact, especially if the screws are not equally tight.

Thanks for any insights!

OK please do not use thermal paste as thermal pads, especially Arctic Silver 5 because it can short stuff out and can potentially destroy you laptop. Plus it makes a huge mess.

I would suggest replacing the stock thermal paste on the GPU. Measure the thickness of the pads and try to search for some online.

Thanks for your comments--I'll look for good quality pads.
