I have a Toshiba Satelite C855-5346 laptop with a 15.6 screen(screen is torn off). It had windows 8 preloaded, but the hard drive failed. I used a new blank hard drive and I tried to install Ubuntu but it will not work at all. When i boot it up, it only show a blank screen and the laptop lights are just blinking. I want to use this laptop for programming on linux. I have a video of what's happening. Has anyone encounter this problem before? I don't care about the laptop and I just want to use it for programming only. That's my purpose for fixing it and if you guys know a way to help me fix it, that will be a very grateful of you! (Apologize for the english!)

1) You described the screen as being "torn off". That's a huge red light. I'd simply trash the laptop, no way to tell what else might have been broken.

2) Blink codes. The manual pages I linked will tell you how to read the lights. Looks like a power issue. Could be battery, power adapter, or power circuit on motherboard (not worth repairing in that case).

It was failing due to strange noises and it would not let me save any documents on it. I replace it with the new one and It's only showing a blank screen. Do you think it could be the RAM?

Blinking lights like that usually indicate some kind of kernel panic. Ie the system has crashed. Could be bad ram or maybe corrupted Ubuntu media (bad iso or bad CD..etc.)

If you don't even get BIOS or splash screen when you boot then something else like RAM is bad..

BTW were you drunk when you took the video?!

Hmm, hard to say. See if you can swap memory with another laptop. Then you could at least rule RAM out. ALso what happens when you swap the old HDD back in? What did the noises sound like and where did they come from? The only real moving part that would make noise is the fan.

That's precisely what I think! I apologize for the video but what you think could be done. I don't care about the laptop anyway because I wanted one to do some programming on.
