Sapphire radeon x1950 xt 256mb pci-e becomes unrecognizable after months of working. This has happened months ago and only reinstalling windows 7 helped, now it is happening again. Device manager is showing "vga controller" with code 28(no drivers) and "standard vga adapter" with old driver. Drivers won't update on neither one of them. CCC 9.1 installed succesfully but nothing changed. Updated chipset drivers, tried installing drivers manually, cleaned contacts with alcohol without any success. Power cable connected.

Specs are:
os: Windows 7 sp1 64 bit
mb: p5q se
cpu: core 2 duo e 7200
ram: 4gb geil
psu: 500 watt

Solution
Have you tried the AMD CCC Legacy 10.2 driver as directed to by the AMD Driver Download page?
10.2: DriverVer=02/10/2010, 8.593.100.0000
9.1: DriverVer=01/13/2009, 8.573.0.0000
If open the driver .INF file can check the video card device number is indeed listed just as is in Device Manager - Display adapter - Properties - Details - Hardware IDs

Card does same thing on another windows 7 64 bit machine. This seems like a card issue. Catalyst 10.2 does not install drivers, device manager, "have disk" selecting .nfo file, neither of three x1950 won't install.

Fix:
I changed "ati2mtag_R580, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_7244" to "ati2mtag_R580, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_7245" in "C:\ATI\Support\9-1_vista64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_74234\Driver\Packages\Drivers\Display\LH6A_INF\CH_74234.inf", in device manager,:"Update Driver", "Let me pick", "Have Disk", appeared x1950 and driver got properly installed.
