my rig is .. i5-3470 , Sapphire HD 7870 XT , 8GB Ram , Thermaltake 450w PSU ..
until now i play all games on Ultra/Tweaked Ultra @ 1080p
i play watch dogs on High Settings, Level of Detail sets on Ultra, HDBO High, and AA sets on FXAA.
and i get 35-47 FPS (sometimes it drops to 30 FPS).

Also i play Crysis 3 on Tweaked ultra settings and i get 30-35+ FPS .. Metro Last Light 40-45 fps on ultra .. Far Cry 3 i get 45-55 FPS on tweaked ultra (sometimes fps drops to 30 on wide high areas).

so i've been wondering for how long my GPU can keep on running upcoming games on High settings at-least? .. i'm not aiming for 60 or 50 FPS, i just want a playable FPS on High/ultra settings.

and do you think i need an upgrade? .. hopefully not, because i bought my GPU Last year and was hoping i get to keep it for more longer. (at least till the end of 2016)

Solution
it depends on the game. but as more 'next gen' type of game coming out and more and more developer intend to take advantage of PC raw performance then we will see even mid range class gpu will start having difficulty to play games on ULTRA. but then again in some games the difference between ULTRA and High are barely noticeable. in some cases not even medium have much difference than ULTRA. the only difference is going for ULTRA will tax the performance severely. me i just pick the setting that i'm comfortable with and try not to think to much about high vs ultra. if i can't run on ultra just take it to high or medium.

Seeing you bought it last year, you ought to have known it wasn't the topmodel any longer.

But you should be fine, if you get problems just buy another 7870 card, or a 270x would be fine for crossfire, but its still only low/midrange gpu.

thanks guys for responding .. i don't think i can crossfire it with another HD 7870, because the XT is from the 7900 series based on Tahiti LE chip (slightly crippled 7950), it can only be crossfired with HD 7950 or 7970.

but how come its a low-mid range gpu ? ..i think a gpu like GTX 750 TI or GTX 660 can be called a low-mid range cards .. but HD 7870XT, R9 270x and GTX 760 are a mid-high graphics cards.

and like i said I'm fine with High (hopefully for 2 years to come), all games looks fine on High, but medium? i think its gonna be difficult for me:(, there is a lot of games looks crappy on medium like watch dogs.

doesn't really matter if it's mid range or entry level what matter is exact performance with games. with more demanding games comes out and developer move to new generation console current generation gpu getting shift down to mid ranger/ entry level faster. even 280X/7970 can be considered as mid range right now price wise. GTX780Ti performance level have been push to $550 (from $700) with GTX980. personally what irritates me was VRAM requirement for some of this new game lol. take Watch Dogs for example i can't max out the game not because i don't have the performance but rather lack of VRAM.

i think most of new Games Requirements especially the VRam part are false .. like shadow of mordor i know someone play it on high with GTX 660 , also "the evil within" requires 4GB VRAM and i saw lots of people can max it out with a gpu like GTX 770 2GB.

with shadow of mordor they recommend 6GB VRAM for ultra texture at 1080p. but only for that. other setiing you can go ultra without worrying about VRAM too much. and it seems the test indicate that the game actually might not use that much VRAM even with ULTRA texture. but when i talk about VRAM it was specifically about watch dogs. first i thought it was problem with SLI (stuttering) but turn down some setting the game run run smooth as silk. turn out it is mostly a problem with card with 2GB VRAM or less.

Low/midrange? The HD 7870 XT remains a high end card and is one of the best cards released in the last 10 years in my opinion. Check out the hierarchy chart on this website
