Hello there,

I have a XPS 8300 that gave up the ghost. I was planning on doing a custom build from scratch. However, I actually like my 8300 case,it also occurred to me that the xps8300 uses a Micro atx board I believe.

Can I install a new aftermarket motherboard+CPU?

What issues would I encounter? If any?

Also any issues with rewiring the front usb ports+audio ports?

BTW:I am aware that I would need to buy a new copy of windows which I am fine with that

Solution

That looks like it should work just fine for you, have fun :)

Well then this ought to be a fun learning experience for you, if it's already broken the only direction you can go in is up :) Take a look at this thread, same question you are asking..
http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2046192/xps-8300-mobo.html

Here are some related threads...may get some good info here also.

Open it up and take a look at it, perhaps even just pull it out if you want. The board should have something written on it saying what it is then you know what you have. It will most likely be an ATX or uATX, just measuring it will tell you. You have many options replacing it, if your CPU is good and you don't want/need to replace it then most LGA 1155 boards will work. Really depends on what kind of stuff you do with it, no need to get a high performance MB if you don't game heavy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATX
This has the sizes of different boards for you to check yours against if you need to.

I agree with him 100%, but it would be good to verify if this is indeed the MB you are taking out.

Motherboard
Manufacturer Dell Inc.
Model 0Y2MRG (CPU 1)
Chipset Vendor Intel
Chipset Model Sandy Bridge
Chipset Revision 09
Southbridge Vendor Intel
Southbridge Model H67

Info I copied from speccy

sad thing is as with dell stuff you lokk that up and never find or see any hard facts on it so you can say ya that's it ...

look at the link I gave above for the formfactors site and there should be diagrams of the form factors layouts all you got to do is compare it to your board to see if it matches the atx standard
cause with out being there for hands on all I can do is guess the best I can with that were not telling dell info ..
this is why dell themselves don't show nothing if so I can find it .. there on the hopes you get discouraged and give up and go buy there new computer

ps there a lot of nice cases for like newegg for less then $60 last one I gopt for a deal like you was this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129187

all parts went in and been just fine for the job

It went great!!!! I settle for a Gigabyte H77M-D3H board. Everything fit nicely. The only issue I am having, which I had with the original Dell is the multi card reader gives me an error "you need to format the disk in drive h before you can use it"
Now if I select format nothing happens, instead I get another message saying, windows was unable to complete format.
I thinks its a software issue, but besides that I love the xps case. I also changed the front panel of the 8300 to 8700, and replaced the front usb 2.0 with the 8700 usb 3.0 ports as well

Hey Bhamaboy, just reading this thread now 5 years later lol

But basically I decided to do the same as you and replace my motherboard with an afterrmarket one. Im having an issue with the front panel connector though where my new mobo doesn't have the same pin layout as the pins on the XPS 8300. Did you also encounter this issue ?
