Upgrading my wireless network from 2.4ghz single band wireless n to a dual band Wireless N setup and I'm looking for a USB adapter for upgrading my laptop to dual band. I would like the adapter to be rather small & compact so I can just leave it plugged in and work on both the 2.4 & 5ghz networks as some of the adapters I've been looking at were 802.11AC adapters that don't seem to support 5ghz 802.11N, only 2.4. Does anybody have any suggestions for a USB adapter that might be suitable?

The best compatibility and performance is guaranteed by choosing an adapter by the same manufacturer as the router (if one exists). You at least know that that adapter and router have been tested for compatibility and you only have one manufacturer to work with if you do have issues.

That said, I have had very good luck with ASUS dual band USB-N53. They also have an AC version USB-AC53.
