Computer crashes can't isolate the problem!!

Hi,

I made my first build a couple months ago and since then I kept having weird problems with It and I'm unable to isolate it to the root cause.

I will explain everything step by step in chronological order.

I didn't have any problem with the computer with the first month of use.

After a while I started to see a weird artifact with my mouse cursor that some people had on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aT7hozGA1cU

Then, my video card started artifacting (I think it may have been caused by overclocking it)
Streched polygons/texture would appear at random, every 1 to 2 weeks.

After putting the GPU clock back to normal, i still got these artifacts.

My computer would also freeze at random sometimes and I discovered that it was maybe linked to Hardware Monitor (software) that i used to check temperatures while trouble shooting.

I stopped using Hardware monitor because of this, however, I did get on one occasion after that another screen freeze while I was playing a game.

My PSU started to make coil whine so I RMA'd it and still got the same issue.

I though that maybe the artifacts were caused by driver corruptions, since I had at least 10 screen freeze where I had to restart manually.

I reinstalled windows 7 and made a clean install of the GPU drivers, and I still got the same problem.

Knowing that I probably damaged my GPU while overclocking, I decided to replace it with a new one and I didn't get the artifacts anymore!!

To my disappointment, I still had the mouse corruption as described above.

Last week I had a blue screen while I was browsing on firefox, I sent the minidump files to someone from Microsoft forums and he managed to isolate this crash to AODdriver. I reinstalled all my non-windows drivers.

I thought everything was fine again but today my computer crashed on me. While i was watching a video, (on firefox again), I didn't get a blue screen but my monitor suddenly went black and after a couple seconds it was full of horizontal lines of multiple colors.

I didn't get anything on event viewer except an event 1101 ''Audit events have been dropped by the transport. 0''. No minidumps files were created this time.

-I did a full run with Memtest 86 with no errors.

-I dont think this is PSU/GPU related since I replaced them.

-The SMART data on my SSD (samsung magician software) doesn't show any anomaly.

-This is not an overheat issue, my case has a very good airflow. My GPU temps never exceeds 70C and my CPU temps don't go over 50C.

Could this be electric/power related??? Someone used a blender in my house in the next room and it crashed at the same time. I also noticed that some time my monitor had lines flashing for a fraction of a second. The lights in my house are also flashing for 1 one seconds sometimes for no apparent reasons. My power bar has surge protection so if its power related, it has to be a lack of power (less power for a fraction of a second).

I reused the blender but wasn't able to reproduce the problem.

Please help!! I had trouble with this build since the beginning. I RMA'd a bad PSU (was making coil while). Then it was the GPU that had artifacts. Now my computer is crashing every week. It seems the problems never stops.

This is my first PC, I made it thinking that I would save money by building it myself, but up until now it has been a fiasco. Lost 400$ on my GPU (I will never overclock a GPU again). I also lost at least 50 hours trying to isolate my problem.

The only things left to check are the CPU, motherboard, and SSD(scanning tools maybe?).

I will run driver verifier to see if its driver related.

What do you suggest I do? If i could just isolate this problem everything would be fine again.

Heres my system specs:

CPU: AMD FX-8350
Mobo: GA-970A-UD3P
GPU: XFX R9 280x Double dissipasion
SSD: Samsung 840 PRO 256 GB
PSU: Corsair HX1050 (I know its overkill but I wanted to have crossfire for later)
HDD: WD Black 1T

Try running your computer with one ram stick and see if it crashes. Switch ram sticks. If computer crashes running on one of the sticks, that ram stick should be faulty. If it still crashes using either single ram stick, that could mean either both sticks of ram are bad which is highly unlikely, or it's something else.

Memtest (ram checking software) didn't detect anything. Is it possible for memtest to not detect anything??

Might aswell try it cause it won't hurt!

I don't know as much as most people on this forum, but it's a test I do on friend's laptops and PC's if they have crashes or bluescreens. So far free'd one laptop and two pc's from bluescreens doing this.

Alright I will try with one ram and also test previous GPU Drivers.

I'm currently on my midterm exams, but as soon as I can I will try these and keep you guys updated.

Thank you for your imput!

Im currently building a trouble shooting check list, so don't hold back if you have any other suggestions. Does anyone know a good SSD checking utility?

Here's my checklist (trying to isolate everything one step at a time).

1. Perform a clean install of my drivers with Display Driver Uninstaller. Will probably install catalyst 14.4 considering that 14.9 is new. Alter that I will use Driver verifier to check If I ever get another blue screen.

2. Checking Ram: I will try Windows Memory Diagnostic as I know it can sometimes detect problems that memtest can't. I will also try using 1 Ram stick. Switching between the two and checking if its not the slot on my MOBO that is defective.

3. Some one suggested to check my bios settings if it increases my GPU bus, creating instability.

4. I will buy a multimeter to check the electrical outlet in the room (if its stable/grounded)

5. Some one also suggested to try a different cable settup for my monitor, since It may be the cause of my mouse corruption.

Hi

I did a research on google and it seem's that catalyst 14.9 is unstable,

I installed 14.4 with DDU for a fresh install.

I thoroughly checked the ram and there's no issue with it

I also changed my HDMI cable for the DVI that came with my monitor but I still get the mouse pointer glitch.

The only thing left is to check the electrical outlet.

I will see if my computer still crashes with 14.4 installed.

Thank you.
