I am aware, but it's still a better idea to go with a more powerful single card then SLI in the future if needed. 970s aren't that much more expensive than 770s and if he SLIs them, he'll have a pretty beefy system.

770 SLI will provide you better performance than a single 970 but you should just go with a 970 and then you'll have the option to SLI in the future. With the 770s, you'll be limited to 2GB of VRAM and will limit you at higher resolutions.

edit: (4GB models of the 770 do exist but for a bit more)
