Hi all,

I am new here and have decided to create this thread explaining my problem. I have found absolutely no matches to what I am about to describe anywhere on the net. I need help because this problem is really bugging me.

Basically, ever since I upgraded my graphics card from an EVGA GTX 550ti to a Gigabyte GTX 760 OC Edition everything has slowly started to deteriorate. At first everything was fine, the card was working like a beast on every game I threw at it, no problems what so ever. However, this lasted about a month. What has now begun to happen is that when I am playing games like call of duty 4 on promod (a competition mod) where I need 250FPS to be able to strafe properly it seems that I can no longer reach that kind of FPS. Instead what is actually happening is my FPS is hitting 250 constant when moving around in not so detailed areas but stuttering and varying from 170 - 248 when in areas of increased detail.

When I first got the card I was able to get 250 FPS constant on cod4 promod no matter where about I was on any map. I was able to play on full graphics and in the highest resolution my TV supports (1080p).

My specs are as follows:
AMD FX-6100 (with arctic cooling freezer 7 pro rev 2 aftermarket cooler)
Gigabyte GTX 760 OC Edition
8GB G-Skill RAM
Corsair CX750
MSI 760G-P43 FX Motherboard

Additional Notes:
• I have noticed a strange whining noise coming from my power supply just recently, it seems to be a nasty case of coil whine but can only be heard when IN GAME and looking at trees and details on the map (especially in cod4). I'm not sure if this may be my problem? Could my power supply be dying? I have had it now for almost a year.

• I have replaced the thermal compound on both CPU and even my GPU to see if the problem regarding my fps issues stops but neither did anything to help.

• I have removed all overclocks from my CPU and this has not changed the performance at all whilst in game on cod4. It doesn't seem to make a difference anymore whether my CPU is overclocked to 4.2GHZ or left at it's stock clock speed of 3.3GHZ... It seems that the GPU does most of the in game rendering for cod4 especially.

Please guys any help would be greatly appreciated... I am currently looking at getting a full upgrade but I want to keep my current GPU and just buy the exact same one so I can SLI two GTX 760's

Many thanks,

Sam (a very frustrated PC enthusiast!)

First when you upgraded your gpu card. Did you do it in this order ...

1 uninstall evga gtx 550 drivers and any software associated with it
2 run driver cleaner
3 reboot
4 install new gigabyte gtx 550
5 install new gigabyte gtx drivers

Other comments : your frame rates look normal. I play battlefield 4 with a GTX 770 superclocked gpu at 1300mhz
and my frame rate is higher when facing less detail and environments. so I go from 130 to 80 fps sometimes lower in maps like parcel storm.
GTX 760 AND 770 are much the same besides 770 gtx has a memory speed boost and overclock gpu.

my first power supply on this rig worked ok for a while , had a whining noise like a old tube tv sound with vol down. that high pitch noise..
then it died .

also .. It is stongly recommended that if you are going to overclock your rig , especially extreme over clocks . you should go with a much more solid power supply. minimum of 1000 watts dude for sure, or you run a high risk of burning out your power supply. especially if your running a beasty gpu and your over clocking to 4ghz + . 750 psu is borderline in my opinion. If your getting any frame rates over 60+ in a game , your good. 100+ even better. anything over 150 is not really worth the power use and effort , unless your a real fanatic haha. I think you should try a reinstall of your gpu the the steps I mentioned. then either down clock a bit , or get yourself a 1000 w psu . you want to make sure you have good clean power supply so that its never really under full load for your rig , or else you will get fluctuations in the total voltage .

Hi mate,

Cheers for your input, but just to update this a little bit I have re installed the drivers for this card several times and used driver sweeper to get rid of any remains for previous drivers... The frame rates for most games are fine, playable for me, and not an issue that needs to be looked into. It is just cod4, a game that I tend to spend most of my time on... I should be getting 250 FPS constant on the lowest settings with this card and in 1080p, but regardless of whether I set the graphics to the lowest settings or the highest settings the frame rate is barely affected... My rig used to be able to get 250fps constant on full graphics with absolutely no issues when playing call of duty 4 promod and now it can no longer do so even on the lowest graphic settings.. I'm a real perfectionist with PC's and I like everything to be running to my expectations. I cannot understand why within the space of 1 month my computer's fps has begun to deteriorate?

Also, the PSU has been making this strange noise yes just like you have described and this started to happen and become noticeable just shortly after I had seen change in my FPS a few months ago... I last upgraded my rig in july, it was at the end of July that issues began to appear! and yet the only part that I actually upgraded was my GPU!

Many thanks,

Sam

So, anyone else who can suggest any ideas?

I suppose the easiest way to put it is - Even when playing cod4 on the lowest settings and lowering the res I am still unable to achieve 250fps constant! it's crazy... I used to be able to get 250 fps constant with me 550ti on the lowest! and now I cannot even reach that with my gtx 760! what the hell is going on with my system... The fps is dropping like mad when in detailed areas but it doesn't matter what settings i put the graphics on, the fps always goes down to about 170 and sometimes it will hit like 130 fps... It's not right at all since when I first got the card everything was fine! even on the highest graphics and resolution!

Ended up being a cpu bottleneck. AMD's multithreading isn't great for hyperthreading optimized games and the OC's did nothing for my performance.

GPU still works fine to this day, and i'm running perfect with my oc'd rig:

2 way sli gtx 760's
i7 4790k oc'd to 4.4ghz (will be going much higher soon)
corsair h100i cooler
crucial 512gb ssd primary
16gb corsair vengeance pro ram 2400mhz
corsair RM850watt psu
msi mpower z87 sp

:D
