Dead PSU substitution

Hi

Here is a hypothetical situation.

A friend brings his PC to me because he's got a problem with it. Let's say the PC will not start because of a defective PSU. But at that stage, I do not know for sure that his PSU is the culprit.

I so happened to have a spare PSU at home that I know works well and I want to test his PSU unit to see if it is the source of his problem. However, I do not want to go through the process of removing his PSU from the case and putting mine in. We’re not replacing anything here. We’re only testing.

Without removing his PSU from the case and substituting my own PSU which is outside the case, what connectors must absolutely be connected in order for my test to work ?

I know I must connect the 24 pin and the 8 pin connectors of my PSU to his motherboard inside the case. I also know that I must reconnect my PSU SATA power connector to his boot drive as well as connect the mouse, the keyboard and the monitor. Is that it ? Assuming that his PSU is the culprit and that nothing else is wrong with his PC, will these steps make his PC boot normally ?

To make a long story short, let me re-phrase that. What do I have to do to substitute a dead PSU to a working PSU WITHOUT removing the dead PSU from the case ?

Thanks folks

if there no fan movement from his power supply or the fan just twitch one or twice..then just plug in the 24 and 8 pin of your power supply. if the system boots it boot to the bios and sit there for you. you can then power down and then plug in his hard drive if you want or replace the dead unit. if the system still does not turn on with your power supply then bare bone it down to onboard video and one ram stick.
