I was playing WoW today when all of a sudden both my monitors went black and there was a buzzing noise in my headphones. I figured my graphics card had crashed (this had happened in the past) so I manually shut my computer off and waited ~10 minutes before turning it back on. When turning it on, I found the screen to look like this: http://i.imgur.com/0qFKTxt.jpg http://i.imgur.com/BtvoohT.png
Note that the pictures aren't poor quality, the resolution of the screen (normally 1920x1080) was excruciatingly low and the colors were obviously very oddly off.
I have an Nvidia GTX 460 and have had it for four years without any lasting problems. Could this be simply due to age? I was not doing anything unusual at the time that the game crashed, so I have little reason to suspect it was due to overuse. I haven't cleaned it in a while though so that could have caused overheating I suppose.

Anyway, I went and uninstalled the driver in the device manager, and when I booted up the computer again the screen resolution was still very low but there weren't any more color problems. (I'm assuming this is because the graphics were coming from the processor rather than the graphics card--I don't know much about computers though so I'm not sure.) I proceeded to try and reinstall the graphics card, only to find that after doing so the same problems as seen in the picture arose again. As well, in the device manager, the graphics card has a small yellow triangle w/ exclamation mark inside next to it and when I open up the card's properties it says "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (code 43).

Is there anything software-related that could fix this, or is it strictly hardware? I'd love to be able to wait until Christmas to get a new graphics card, but if it is a hardware issue I guess I'd have to push that date forward. Thanks in advance for any help.

:( I was hoping this wasn't the case. Are there any other more current graphics cards that can operate with peripherals that a GTX 460 uses? (Power supply/motherboard/etc) Am I going to need to upgrade all the other parts of my PC now as well?
