I have an external Toshiba hard drive and I was wondering if I could use that as my main hard drive that I have windows and games and everything on it and get an internal hard drive later? It's 5400 rpm, so how would running games and programs on it be?

Solution
No, not gonna work.

OK....there are possible ways to install Windows to an external drive. But external + 5400RPM drive = watching paint dry.

If you must use that drive, take it out of the enclosure and install it internally.
