my black widow keyboard is acting strangely backspace and a lot of the letters on the keyboard do not work. Also some of the keys instead of being typed onto the screen control the menu bar at the top of the webpage for example when i hit e instead of typing an e it opens the edit menu at the top of the screen. Did i somehow hit a key combo to cause this or is my keyboard malfunctioning?

Keyboard is malfunctioning. Your Alt key is short and when you press e, it press alt +E (Edit menu). I would say pry open the keys and clean it with a cloth. If it doesn't solve the problem, RMA it.
Blackwidow is a wonderful keyboard (I have the 2014 version), but Razer QA is not the greatest I would say.

Oops! looks like some liquid got into the keyboard circuit. Take the keys off again and let it dry for a day. Hopefully it solves the problem.
