Looking for a budget, low cost video card for HTPC.

Hi all,

I use an older rig (Q6600 with 4 GB ram and a 8800 GTS 512) as an HTPC. The video card died a year or so ago, but I was able to get another year of life out of it by using the oven trick. Unfortunately, it's dying again (random shutoffs and won't turn back on at times).

I threw in an older PCI-E 5800 card using beta Vista 64-bit drivers on the Win7 system (only drivers available). When testing, the computer blue screened after choppily playing an HD YouTube video.

Since one card is dying, and the other not very compatible with Win7 64-bit, I'm thinking it's just best to buy a new card at this point.

I was looking at the GT 610 as a possible option. On paper, it appears to be overall much less powerful than the 8800 GTS, but it doesn't use as much energy and would only cost ~$30 after MIR. Is this card sufficient for running 1080P video without choppiness and a bit of a buffer?

If not, is there another card I should spend a bit more on to make sure I have adequate performance?

Thank you!

If you are only seeking to watch videos, That card is fine. Even an old Radeon 5670, An Nvidia 8400 GS, or a Radeon R5 230 would serve your purpose well at a similar price point. Run with your $30 card and be done with it.

What games do you play and what power supply do you have? A 610 GTX is a rather weak card. It consumes less power but also puts out less performance as well.

If you want a card that pulls very little power and puts out great performance that won't be bottlenecked by your processor, get a GTX 750 ti.

If it costs too much money for you, give me a price point and I will help you find something better.

Cheers!

Thanks for your response TStahler. It's honestly just to play 1080p movies/streaming video on. I wouldn't really use it for gaming. If anything I may use a Nintendo/N64/Sega emulator with a controller to play vintage console games. Otherwise, that's about it. The power supply is 600W.

I could afford to, but don't really want to spend more than $50 if it's not necessary. I've got a newer PC that I use for my games. I want something for the HTPC that will do 1080p with a fair bit of headroom, but don't want to spend more than what's needed. The 8800 GTS seemed to perform nicely and seemed very fast for what I'm using the PC for, I just wish it wasn't dying out =(

Thanks!
