Have internet connect, just cannot surf.

A few days ago, after installing some updates, I lost the ability to connect with the internet. I am connected through a router, and other devices, both wireless and directly connected, are working fine. Another computer, when connected directly using the same port, works fine. I have little experience with hardware settings, but I've tried everything that has been suggested in this forum and others. I'm using windows 7. Can someone help? Thanks

Is your PC connected using Wifi or LAN?

Look into your wifi/ethernet adapter properties (in device manager)

and set DNS server to 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 (Google DNS) or any other server you know to be working.

Also try clearing your DNS cache.

PC is connected via LAN. Set DNS server to values you suggested and cleared DNS cache - still no connect. Found 3 ethernet adapters listed - first two say that there is no problem. The third, Teredo Tunneling Pseudo Interface cannot start - code 10

When I checked the properties for the Teredo I found the Network Address value box blank.

Resolved the Teredo problem, but I still can't surf. Everything I check tells me that I am connected to the internet. I've disabled virus software and firewall. Still nothing.

Are you using internet explorer? you are make sure your browser is not set to "work offline". This can be done by going to file menu (if you do not see it, press alt on your keyboard once). From there go to file menu in the drop down menu it may have check mark next to work offline option, if it does you need to uncheck this.

I'm not using IE, but I tried what you suggested just in case. My IE File dropdown has no "Work Offline" option.

I still feel like I'm no closer to a solution, but I am learning some things about ipv4, ipv6, netsh and network connections - that's some consolation. I've tried everything I know to try and everything that has been suggested - except for re-installing the operating system. I really don't want to do that because I have a large amount of data that I need to back up first. Any more suggestions? Thanks.
