Hi
I run a small business which involves giving laptops out on rentals. I've got multiple Windows 7 and Windows 8 Laptops.
How do I make system backups for each of these laptops and save them on an external hard drive?
Windows 8 currently asks you to put in a USB stick of about 16gb or more, makes a backup and that's it.
But it's not practical to buy 15 nos USB sticks just for backup.
Once that's answered, saving a restore image on an external drive would be very useful. Then each time a laptop comes back corrupted by a virus, etc, I can restore the laptop to a point that has Office, and reccent Windows Service packs installed.
A big big thanks
Cal.

if i was you i go one or two extra steps. new laptop back up image or make copy of restore disk or with free microsoft tools make your own company iso image. slipstream all of the service packs and drivers needed for your laptops.
but the iso on a dvd if it fits or on cheap desktop or one or two usb sticks. laptop comes back in...boot to network or usb stick and put the unit back to new image. wont have to worry about any old data on drive.
go one step further and use a vm ware so that the renter cant add or remove anything from the laptop. save files to a user folder and use web and apps but cant delete or become an admin. take a few more steps to make a iso image with vm warre but it keep people from hacking the admin info on the...

Would this work?
http://www.backup-utility.com/free-backup-software.html

This is how I imagine the process to work:
Backup:
1. Connect the external USB disc and load the AOMIE software on the Laptop which has to be backed up.
2. Choosing the Backup>System Backup option, create a backup in a folder on the external drive.
Restore:
3. On a different machine running AOMIE, create a bootable USB pen drive with the backup files
4. Connect the pen drive to the faulty laptop, change boot order to removable USB and restore system to internal laptop drive.

I've downloaded AOMIE and creating the back-up as we speak, but will not be following the Resore steps as it's a new laptop working just fine. Note: Not interested in backing up any personal/user data, just OS and drivers should the internal laptop's drive get corrupted/fail.
Much thanks
Cal.
