Hey folks,

So I just got myself a new GTX 970. Though I'm quite satisfied with the upgrade (I used a GTX 570 for the last 4 years) I feel like I'm not using the most out of my 970. In addition to my 570 I bought a Phenom II X6 1050(8GB G.Skill Ripjaws RAM).
I think the cpu and the gpu worked quite well together. But right now even a completly retarded drunk monkey can see that my cpu(still using the 1050, though OC'ed at 3,5Ghz) is bottlenecking my gpu.

It's not just a feeling but I really sometimes get a bad performance in most of the modern games out there(Shadow of Mordor, Crysis 3, Dead Rising 3, Skyrim with mods, the Vanishing of Ethan Carter, ArcheAge), BF4 in particular. I do have a nice AVG fps getting high as 60+ in those games but also some nasty 30 fps and below in some areas. I don't think that this suits my 970.

As I said, with no doubt, my 1050 is the bottleneck of my system. My question now is , is a upgrade to my cpu worth it? Will it significantly increase my fps (or at least my min fps)?
I was looking at a couple tests and benchmarks and the i5 4690K seems to be the best for my budget(Maybe you can recommend me something even better. Keep in mind, I need a pure gaming cpu. 250€ would be my budget max). The i5 probably will outperform my AMD, but will the boost be recognizable? Since I have to change the mainboard too, the upgrade will cost me more than 300€ and I'm not filthy rich, that's why I'm asking for your opinion.

(If the i5 4690k is worth it, could you recommend me a mainboard too? Nothing special, but it has to support 4 RAM slots and OC)

Yes you're likely noticing sections of games which are particularly taxing on the CPU, causing your performance to drop.

At least the i5 that you've mentioned and you should see no drops such as those you've experienced. I personally tend to have good experiences with MSI boards, however others tend to like Asus and ASRock specifically, so you should have no trouble with those that others have suggested. Grab yourself the parts and enjoy.

Sry, maybe I'm just to blind to see or there might be a misunderstanding, but I don't actually know how to read out gaming temp in bios...you know, since I would be in bios then, and not gaming. Also, the %Usage of my CPU...under which circumstances? In-game at the spot where the fps begins to drop? If I tab out too see the usage, won't this affect the usage, since the game only runs in background?
@Temp: It's most likely not a temperature issue. I'm currently using the Scythe Ninja 3(which I won't be able to use on the i5-4690k anymore, right? The packaging says it supports only LGA 775/1156/1366 for Intel. It's my first time Intel, so don't be too rough..) + 4 other fans. I don't know if the app Core Temp is reliably of any sort, but the temperature never reached 35°C at full load using Prime95. I'm using the Arctic MX-4 thermal paste too.

@others: Thanks for the fast responses. It seems my concerns have been proven to be correct. Not a surprise though, it's a 4 years old mid-range CPU. If anyone objects to this purchase, let them speak now or forever hold their peace.

My mobo is quite old. So no UEFI ;( But I really really doubt it's the temps that cause stuttering.
CPU Usage is something between 55-65%(The game uses 55-65%, total usage is something above 60%, mostly 70+%).

Even the FX 6300 beats it? Okay, this is definitaly the proof. Thank you for all of your help, time and suggestions. It's going to be the i5 4690K on the ASUS Z97-A. Have a blessed day.
