GTX570 High RPM Issue?

Hello!

I have an old Gainward GTX 570 that I have been using for over three years now. I am currently having an issue where the fans RPM sits at 4000 regardless of the activity (despite GPU Fan % sitting at 30-35%). I'm pretty sure its not a driver issue as it happens on both my Windows and Linux distributions and happens before the computer even boots up. On BIOS the fans RPM is already skyrocketing.

I have been recently seeing a pattern where if I run a graphically intensive program (say a benchmark) and get the temps up and the GPU Fan %, after the benchmark the RPMS will go down to sub 2000 and sit there quietly for about 2-3 minutes before they rev up, somewhat sporadically (2.3k then suddenly 3.5k, then down to 3k, then up to 4k etc.).

Any help would be appreciated.

Solution
I would remove the heatsink, blow it out, clean the base and replace the thermal paste. Its most like full of dust and cannot regulate the temps well.

It seems to settle down a bit now after the computer has been on for a while, but still whirrs like crazy for the first 30 minutes the computer is on.

I can manipulate the fan speed in afterburner, and I can hear the audible change, but this doesn't affect the RPMs in anyway.

It's really hard to tell if it will come back, but for now it has settled down. Hopefully cleaning the heatsink has fixed it.

Final Verdict:

It was still at 4000 RPM for the first hour even after cleaning. But I've been using it for a day and a bit and its never done it since so Ill consider it fixed, cheers!
