Pretty common in the crypto-currency world to run GPUs using an external ribbon. What are your concerns on power exactly? The GPU will still need its power connectors populated with something that provides 12V at the appropriate current. Most of the ribbon adapters I have seen come with a Molex power connector so that the current doesn't have to travel the extra length of the cable itself which the motherboard wasn't designed to deliver.

gah, sorry i shouldnt have edited my thread.

but basically i wasnt looking to poewr the gpu via the molex of the ribbon. was looking to power via that ac adapter as was shown in the pic. But i think i found a work around, hence the forum edit. Using this: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/EXP-GDC-Laptop-External-External-PCI-E-graphics-card-Expresscard-Set-ATX/1480989524.html. Still doesnt solve my question about how to power it though. Ill have to look into it more.

I looked aorund and a ribbon wont be long enough to do what i wanna do, i think i need to go the mini pcie route which is why i need to know the speed of mini pcie and if its worth it, still doing some research.

original post in case someone was wondering
Was looking for options to get my video card out of my tower so i can do a tiny itx system and was looking for something like this that this guy did:

http://www.surrealix.com/image/egpu/eGPU_1.jpg

My main question is does anyone know how he went about powering it? What connects that ac adapter to the board itself?

Also maybe someone can help me with my thinking and if this will work for this mini itx system i am thinking about. Normally ill run the computer without the egpu on, getting my video from the onboard vga of the mobo (using my i5's 4600). When I want to play games ill shut down the comp and restart with the egpu on that is connected via a pciex16 ribbon into a slit i will cut into the case. Hopefully the comp will auto detect and run graphics through the card at that point or am i looney.

That one from Aliexpress is intended for laptops with an Express Card slot. Most run at PCIe 2.0 1x. There are a couple of purpose built external GPU enclosures, but none of them are cheap. A couple of thunderbolt ones, and a few that come with a pseudo custom cable that runs to a PCI bracket at the back of the main system.

yea i guess what i want to do is not ordinary. i know my gaming days are limited so i just want to hang on to the gpu for a bit longer and eventually i want a tiny system that i can hide somewhere and sell off the gpu without having to get a new case. Wasnt even going to put it in an enclosure, more like an external gpu "dock"

here is a pcie version

what was the "pseudo custom cable that runs to a PCI bracket" you mention? Something with a x16 to a x16 connector would be awesome.

i do have a VIdock right now but dont really like that limitation of the 1x let alone the 2x power adapters needed to power the thing.

This was the mobo i was originally looking at.
