If this is supposed to go in networking and not this post then please let me know and I will correct it. I have 13 years experience as a hardware tech. I have built, customized and rescued many computers. I can hack my way into about any O/S for the purposes of account recovery (you would be amazed how many people lock them selves out of their computers). I am decent with Linux and setting up wireless networks. Here's the problem. FILE SHARING AS WELL?!?

OK. Now I know that it can be done but I am not sure what to buy or how to set it up. This is what I have. A customer with 2 desktops side by side on a long desk want to be able to share files and programs between both. They do NOT have a server and don't want to get one so I turned them off to the idea of remote access. They do not currently have any kind of wireless set up but would like to do so. They would need a secure guest connection set up and one for them but would probably prefer to stay connected to the internet via RJ45. Both computers are identical HP's with at least a Duo Core and I believe 6 gigs of ram. Processor may be a Quad Core but I am unsure. Both are running windows 7 home premium.

Question is what do I need to set this up for them (Cheaper is better :-/ )?
How do I set it up.
Please explain as if you were explaining this to my 6 year old.

Are they both on the same network? If so then you just need to setup a read/write file share on the one pc and allow the other pc to access it.
If they are not on the same network then more work would need to be done. Which is your use case.

That is the wrong thing to use here, totally. Media Center is designed to share MEDIA files like movies and music not files in a business.

File sharing is one of the most basic things you can do on a network and there are a lot of resources out there.
Just do a web search for Windows 7 file sharing and there you go.

You can't share programs unless they are licensed and setup for network use, which many off the shelf programs are not. There are multi user programs where the core is setup on a server along with the licensing and then the clients run a small stub setup to install local files that are needed.

The rest of your post seems to be missing some details. Are the computers networked already? Why do they want a guest connection?

install a another network card for the 'main' pc, make a crossover cable, connect second pc to 'main' pc. on main pc setup internet sharing on the new network card. you may need to set up ip addresses, else get a router plug internet in wan port and pcs in the lan ports and right click the folder to share goto properties and sharing tab.

should get you in the right direction.
