Hello! My friend has a HD 6800 series gpu and looking to upgrade so he wants to give his card to me but doesnt know if its a 6850 or 6870 (those are the only 6800 series right?)

My motherboard is: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4726#ov

I see on amd's site that both the 6870 and 6850 are PCI express 2.1

Will my motherboard be able to run them?

1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x16 (PCIEX16)(The PCIEX16 slot conforms to PCI Express 3.0 standard.)
1 x PCI Express x1 slot (The PCI Express x1 slot conforms to PCI Express 2.0 standard.)

If it is able to run them which slot should of these two should I use?

[EDIT] I should have mentioned my CPU is a AMD A8 7600 APU with integrated r7 graphics - is it compatible with the HD 6800 series? Will only one of them be able to be running simultaneously? Are they going to work as dual graphics combination?

Thank you for reading my question! :)

Solution
The answer to your thread is Yes you can use the card in the board a PCIE 3.0 card can run on a PCIE 1.0,2.0 and vice verse .
And yes AMD apu integrated GPu can run with a external GPU .

Well I inherently have one integrated gpu in my APU, so strictly by definition I suppose I would be running two video cards o_O. I think my post was extremely clear.

I have an integrated video chip. I have no dedicated graphics card. I want to have one. I have at my disposal an HD 6800 series. I want to install it to boost my performance and fps in games. Can I?

Hi, thanks but I'm not willing to spend any money on a gpu right now, I want to use this one cause he is giving it to me for free. What do you mean by it wouldnt be a good fit?

Yep, as for the slot, if you're only running one card, it should go in the top slot.. PCI-E is backwards compatible, so even a 3.0 card would work in that slot. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work.
