Hello guys, good afternoon ( or good whatever-time-you-are-right-now :) )

I have a very hard dilemma:

I Already have a XFX R9 280X for a year now, and I'd like to change for something more powerfull ( I'm already needing to use lower AAs on Ultra, while playing AC:BF and WD ) So I thought about buying a Sapphiretech Radeon HD 7990.

But then those 2 cards from NVidia came out ( gtx 970 & 980 ) ... I always wanted to try an NVidia GPU, but they were always sooooo more expensive than AMD, so I never did, but this time they made, good GPUs on a good price ... But I've never seen a "versus" video comparing these two graphic cards

So which one is better? Gigabyte GTX 980 or Sapphiretech Radeon HD 7990

Considering that 980 costs BRL 2.322,00 // 7990 costs BRL 3.189,00 (BRL 2.800,00 on sale)

Thank you in advance, have a nice day

How about two 970s in SLI? That'd be better than any of the current options, provided your MoBo and PSU supports that, it'd be my choice. Otherwise, GTX 980, for it's numerous benefits, and performance wise it can max out any title with 60+ FPS. HD 7990 eats lot of power, and is not much better than 980, if at all.

2 * 970,
a 970 overclocked is almost a 980 but much cheaper, it's such a good card that retailer can't keep them in stock.

If you have the power supply for it I would go with a 7990. It's faster and has a full 6GB of VRAM compared to the 980's 4GB. Only drawbacks are that not every game is optimized for crossfire and the 7990 can get a bit loud under very heavy loads.

If you can find a 280X on the cheap I would try it instead as its a little faster than a 7990 (which is two 280X's on one board) but two cards could potentially be even more loud. Either way if you got another 280X or the 7990, unless you have a solid 700W+ PSU then it would be more cost effective to get the 980 (which Black Flag is optimized for)

One of the worst video cards ever made versus one of the best ever made....hmmm.

When it launched, a generous eight-game bundle had me on the fence about the 7990’s prospects. But after spending time evaluating its thermals and acoustics (to say nothing about its crashes and performance hiccups in CrossFire, which could become a story unto itself), I can’t think of one reason to recommend 7990 to a friend. And, at the end of the day, that’s what this job is all about.

Thank you very much guys, unfortunately I can only pick one as the solution, but every one of your gave me a piece of information to think carefully over :)

17seconds - I didn't know that 7990 had those many problems, I never looked for problems on the GPU only the gameplays with FPS showing and going over to gpuboss to see technical things I didn't understand very much, saying dumbly 'that's 6Gb VRAM for you' ... Sad. But thanks anyways for your opinion, you guys are pretty kind, and FAST I must say ;)

I'll come by tomorrow again to check if new things come up, but u guys have my gratitude , I'd buy a candy if i didn't have to save up one more month to buy the "new heart" of my Astoroth(PC's name lol)

The 7990 was discontinued after only a couple months on the market. Rather than take its place as the triumphant new flagship card, it instead served as a model for all that is wrong with AMD reference cards and Crossfire. Heat, noise, power consumption, driver problems, coil whine, and frame pacing problems were all on display in the majority of reviews. If you are finding one of these cards for sale new, over a year after it was discontinued, it must be one they just couldn't manage to sell regardless of the drastic price cuts.

When it comes to raw power the 7990 can put out more fps if you set it up right. The 7990 had problems when it launched because it didn't play well with Windows 7. The 7990 crossfire setups had bad performance because the huge card size created a vortex and fed the other card hot air or no air at all, which made it throttle both card making it slower than a single 7970. This doesn't happen when you water cool the cards. Or fix a fan in between the cards. 7990 crossfire is beast in Windows 8.1
