Hi,

Im currently building my first gaming pc. I've had a look online for motherboards and my eye has caught the MSi Z87-GD65 but i dont know if my intel i7 960 CPU will work with it?!

Can anyone help me out by explaining why?

I think its because of the CPU socket, but if i have to buy a new CPU then i will do so because im loving the specs on that motherboard.

No, the cpu is not compatible. You will need a Haswell socket 1150 cpu to use a Z87 motherboard.
Reason for why, different socket is used for the i7 960 and the Z87.

i7 960 is socket FCLGA1366. i5 4690k is socket 1150.
The Z87 motherboards are socket 1150.
