Hi,
I have a Western Digital My Passport portable hard disk. I would like to connect it to my new modem in order to make it always available on every pc connected to wi-fi. The modem provides that feature and I could easily connect it, everything was ok, BUT... I have a question.

Is it advisable to let My Passport stay connected all the time? After a while the small light on it starts flashing, I think it indicates such a stand-by mode, but it never never turns off and the hard disk stays always a bit hot.
Will the heat damage it on the long run?

Hi there io me,

It is not really advisable to use your My Passport for streaming. Usually, the fast flashing light(around 3 times a second) means that the drive is reading/writing. If this is the case, you can expect relatively shorter drive life(due to constant activity). If the light blinks slowly(approximately every 3 seconds), then the drive is in a stand by mode.
The heat should not be an issue.

It isn't a significant amount of heat. I've left mine plugged in for upwards of 12 hours and have never noticed any overheating issues. Those models aren't really designed to be kept on for extended periods of time, but as long as you keep it in a well-ventilated area, it's probably fine. Stick a small fan near it if you get worried. One of those larger ones in upright/standing external enclosures might be a better option for something like this though.
