So i just built my PC, and I'm at installing Windows. However, i only have an old HDD that has some backed up folders on it (pictures, moies, resumes, etc., also no OS on it). If i install Windows on it, will my files be erased? Is there a way to install it on the HDD without that happening?

rename the folders to something that windows doesnt install. Like create a C:\backup directory and throw everything in there and they wont be touched unless you tell windows to format the drive or delete the partition.

btw - if these are the ONLY copies of those files then its not a backup. A backup is an EXTRA copy of the file. The more important the file the more backup copies you should have.

Your first priority should be to make a backup copy if you dont have one. I suggest making two at minimum and keep one of them off site. I keep a copy of my backup dvd's in my sisters basement, they keep their backup copies in mine. Unless a nuke takes out NY, i'll always be able to restore my files.
