I have ram from 3 years ago. I ordered new ram and it is smaller in size than the older ram. (This is desktop ram) Is this the way new ram is sold now?

I'm sorry, maybe I worded this wrong. I'm talking about memory. I don't understand what this has to do with the heatsink. Could you further explain. Thanks

Some memory ships with heatsinks attached. Like in this article: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/g.skill-ddr4-ripjaws-3333mhz,27611.html

If you are talking about the size of the physical chips, yes they tend to get smaller over time due to die and process shrinking. Makes them less expensive since integrated circuits are still cost per wafer. More chips per wafer the cheaper they are to make.

They get to reduce voltage and heat the smaller they make them as well. Which is exactly what you are looking for in a mobile device, which is the emphasis, rather then the desktop.

Old:

Newer:

And they have lower profile memory since the PCB no longer needed to be as large.

More or less the heatsinks are for the enthusiasts and appearance. Most 1.5v memory doesn't require an extra heatsink at all.

DDR4 is even lower voltage at 1.2 and requires even less dissipation.

Yes both plug in the same. The newer ones are shorter in height than the older ones. The model # on the old one is KVR1333d3/2GETR (2gig). The newer one is KVR13N9S8/4 (4gig).
