Software protection service often running at 30% randomly and doesn't go away for minutes.. this becomes really annoying.

My awesome ultrabook becomes a noisy, overheated piece of crap.

Couldn't find any solution online, lots of posts about some viruses. Viruses has nothing to do with it, it's a stupid bug from Microsoft that is not fixed for a long time.

I am using an official version of MS OFFICE 2013 and Windows 8.

Does anyone know a solution?

I wouldn't want to start creating new accounts, formatting windows and disabling everything on my startup list. Please reply if you really have a solution for this case, not just a general thing (I know these too :) )

Thank you!

Do you have an internet connection when it is running?

Have you run disk cleanup to remove the temporary updates, patches, etc., from the system? There is a ton of files, and it may take a while for the software to go through the list of all the updates.

Have you verified that Windows and MS-Office is "genuine" and activated? (if either of these aren't activated for some reason, this can slow things down as well.

Last - you may need to run scandisk on the drive(s) to verify that you don't have a software corruption. Malware can also give issues here - but the above items are more likely.

If everything "fails" - you may have to reinstall the software on the computer (Windows 8 and MS-Office) - and I would suggest doing a clean install.

ronintexas,

I am always connected, so its hard to identify if this happens while I am connected or not. I think that MOST of the time it happens when I open Excel or Word, but also sometimes when I don't. Sometimes it finishes really fast and sometimes it goes for minutes.
I did not run disk cleanup. I will do that now. Thanks

Windows is genuine (the one coming with the laptop) and office also.

I did what you suggested and it didn't help.

Now it runs almost constantly. There is no logic in it. it just turns on and off when it feels like. This is a big nuisance for me, it's 30% of cpu, causing my laptop to be very noisy and almost unusable. This is not a virus.

Any other ideas you can suggest?

I am not going to perform clean installs, this is not a solution.

Thanks
