I have an old dell presicion 470 (I am currently ordering parts for a new pc) and Myfreind gave me his Asus R9 280x gpu. I have already made sure that the wattage is high enough in my psu (550 w) but my psu only has a 6 pin connector, the gpu requires 6 and 8 pin. would this adapter solve my problem? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812201038&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC-_-pla-_-Internal+Power+Cables-_-N82E16812201038&gclid=CjwKEAjw5ZKiBRDhqa-Yjcml9kYSJABia-RnCSVSNCg83y1mjfIyxClFZLjM3G6YEKfDUCxYdvDW0RoCllbw_wcB

In its day, the 470 was a beast. Today, it is sorely lacking in computational prowess. You can try the adapter and it may be okay. Just keep an eye on your temperatures.

I would recommend you start thinking about a new rig that your pretty decent video card to go into.

I wouldn't trust that old Dell PSU to be able to power the GPU. I think you are also going to have trouble installing the 280X because of its size and it is going to add a lot of heat to the inside of the 470. The 470 is going to bottleneck tremendously with your old CPU as well.

Have you actually tried inserting into the slot and closing the case yet?

yeah, it fits no problem, i have added a few other fans to the case as well But the bottlenecking issue you bring up was the first thing that crossed my mind. this computer was, im pretty sure, at one point a server. it has a single core xeon in it. So it not like i could run any cpu-dependant games like skyrim or anything. it also does not take much to bring the cpu to 100% (something as simple as opening google chrome usually does it)
