How long would it take before I would need to upgrade from a gtx 980 sli when gaming on 1080 and 1440p?

I'm Planning on wanting to crank up the settings on 1080 and 1440p and play new games with my gtx 980 sli. How long would it take before I would need to upgrade my graphics card setup?

Solution
GTX 980's in SLI should be able to handle 1440p for many many years, probably 5 or more (at the current rate things are going). 12-16GB of system RAM would be ideal to keep up as well.

If you run a GTX 980 SLI setup you should be venturing off into the amazing world of 4K gaming. Ditch 1080p and never look back. But to answer your question, you'll be able to play at those resolutions for a very, very long time.

Your talking about looking into the future (You will need time machine to do that) Tech changes very fast, game engines are being developed, anybody that will give you a number of years are wrong. If you have a 1440P monitor buy SLI 970's and see what the future brings. Look at just the last year 780ti 500 bucks and now a 970 with very close performance for 350.
If you have a 1080p monitor now buy a single 970 when you upgrade the monitor add another 970.
It's a never ending cycle.
