I've ran an AMD (ATI at the time) card with an Nvidia card. It can be done as long as you don't use Vista. If all you want to do is add more monitors this is doable. I've done it. They will work at the same time. (as long as you don't use Vista.) That's why I asked about what he means by "combo". It might also be possible to use the nvidia card as a PhysX card, but that's a lot trickier.
