GTX 980; should I go for it?

So I have a decent single card setup, but I'm looking at the new req's of some games and trying to predict how that will go over the course of 2015, and I want to upgrade to a solution that will allow me to stay on top (ie max out, or damn near close to) the games going into Holliday season next year, if not beyond.

My current setup is:

i5 3570k @4.2GHZ
Gigabyte Z77 mobo
Gigabyte GTX 760 2GB
Crucial 16GB DDR3
Samsung 850 Pro 500GB
EVGA G2 750w PSU
Asus 27" monitor 1080p <-------------- not intending to upgrade this anytime soon

I would not get the 970 over a 980 simply because both cards would likely last me the same amount of time, and I'm a bit of a fps-whore so I'm fine with laying out the extra $$ for it, at this time.

I just don't want to buy something now, then the greatest GPU known to man is released in Jan.

If you aren't concerned about cash as you said do a 980. But for close to a single 980 you could do SLI 970 if your mobo supports it which is also will get insane performance.

I missed the last part of your OP.

The thing is if you keep waiting, there will always be a brand new card in a couple of months. You keep waiting, nothing will happen. I'm an FPS whore as well. So GTX 980 would do you good haha.

@Gam3r01. - I get close enough to that on BF4 Ultra AA with my 760. But that's my point here, I'm not worrying about 77 vs 88 fps on bf4, I'm thinking about the next benchmark games 6-12 months from now and whether those numbers go to, say, 35 vs 55 fps on Ultra 2xMFAA.

I'm trying to decide between the 980 now and what might or might not come out in the next cpl months

There are rumors that R9 300 series are coming out in 2015. Do you still want to wait? GTX 980 is really good, if you get one from EVGA, they've got a stepup program that will let you upgrade without costing the full price of the card.

If you wait, you will always be waiting.
Also, the cards degrade (in terms of new games, not physically) at the same rate. They will both offer the same percentage rates of performance, just scaled down. The 980 is an odd card at the moment, it performs well, but not enough so to justify its own cost.

If you are worried about benchmarks and future performance, get a future card/make the decision then. Speculation on 6+ months in the future is pointless, as hardware and requirements shift frequently. There could be a 980Ti, or the r9 300 series by then, or rumors of a next gen Nividia linup once more worth waiting for.
