I recently purchased a laptop from Asus with a Ralink 802.11n Wireless LAN card built in. I am currently running Windows 8.1 64bit and am having a very unique problem with the card and/or it's driver.
On any WiFi network (I have tested with many different routers and providers) I noticed that I was experiencing very slow internet speeds, usually around 0.2~0.5 Mbps on networks that should be delivering much higher speeds (around 20 to 50 on the networks I tried). Note: I tested the networks with other laptops and received these higher speeds. I can also easily achieve higher speeds when plugged directly into the ethernet ports, though I know that uses a different card and driver all-together.
I have tried using many different driver versions including the most recent version release for my specific card, V5.0.46. This is where my problem gets interesting. I work with computers and hardware often and have never seen this sort of issue before: when I first install/reinstall/update the driver version to almost any driver version, the wireless works seemingly flawlessly, easily achieving speeds past 20 Mbps. After a while, however (let's say an hour or so), the wireless speeds recedes back down to it's excruciatingly slow 0.3~ Mbps. This has happened with all of the drivers I have tried, including the most recent versions of the driver V5.0.46 and V5.0.37.
Every time it happens, I check to make sure that the driver hasn't reverted to a different version and is still running the version that it it was just working on.
Could this be a problem with the wireless LAN card itself or is it just a driver issue?Does anyone have any suggestions for solving this problem? Has this issue ever been reported before? I've looked around on many forums and couldn't find anything similar
Thanks,
Chris
