Minecraft Low FPS on 4790k and R9 290?

I know minecraft is utilized by Nvidia cards with OpenGL, but in minecraft 1.8 now, I don't even see the Advanced OpenGL option anymore, and I am getting low fps with my setup.

I am able to max BF4 at 70-110, but I only run Minecraft at max settings at 70-200fps in 1080p.

My 290's GPU clock goes up to roughly 800-933mhz, but it should be solid at 1000mhz.
My GPU load is usually 0-7%, with random spikes to 70-100%. I am basically not using my GPU in the game at all.
I'd be okay with this, but my 4790k also is only used 22-38%. All cores have a small load, but only about 2 use over 30% of their core, hence the 20-38% total usage...
Even though the GPU isn't running, I'd have thought the CPU would run the game faster.
My Intel gpu should be off, it doesn't even show up in my Device Manager.

Why is it running like this? Is this normal for all AMD GPU's?
I Re-installed Java, made a custom CCC profile, Even Optifine. Optifine helps some, but my, even 660ti's get 300+ fps...

Is this normal with an i7 or AMD gpu and what can I do?

We're talking about minecraft, why in the world would you need that much FPS? 40 is MORE than enough...
besides, you should pay a premium to play triple-A games, not incredibly famous indies made in a heavy but easily extendible language...

In any case, being Java, intensive graphic load will come only with mods and shaders; mostly, you'll see CPU and RAM spike up through the ceiling.
I don't own the game, but like any Java application, I suppose you can provide the JVM its launch parameters somehow.

You might want to increase the RAM it can use by heap size and permgen space, provide a particular garbage collector, or use an open source JDK/JRE rather than oracle's default one. You should also install the 64 bit version of Java...

Yes, but I'd like to mod and add shaders. Modded minecraft with 117 mods ran around 40-80fps.. that is NOT cool for a $1600 rig.

How can I get the game to utilize my CPU and GPU fully? is my i7's usage normal, or is it just that Nvidia GPU's are utilized thanks to the OpenGL support?

Seeing the fame of minecraft, there should be ton of JVM tweaks to Google for that will improve the performance of the game :)

Maybe that's ok for you but for an enthusiast gamer having spent a decent amount of money below 60 is not acceptable. Mine craft having relatively low fps for it's visuals is due to the fact that it's engine is Java and horribly optimised. I don't think there is any solution. Maybe now that Microsoft has minecraft maybe they will update the engine we can only hope.
