I have the opportunity to buy one of these MB/CPU combos at about the same price. The MBs are a Gigabyte Z68 and an Asrock 990FXA. Which would make the better gamer with a fast graphics card?

Performance-wise the 8350 is faster especially on multithreaded programs that are optimized for 8 cores, but the AM3+ socket has limited upgrade options so if you plan to upgrade get the i5.

Barely, assuming the 2500k is at stock clocks. The 2500k is faster most of the time.

That's ignoring the fact that the 8350 can overclock too, It can go over 8350 perf a bit, but it won't certainly obliterate the 8350

Yep that's pretty much the case most of the time, and it's better for the OP to choose the i5 since AM3+ is a dead end socket with no upgrades in the near future.

Same goes for the 2500k as its also on a dead end socket.

Again though, I use both daily, the 2500k is faster most of the time, and in the few cases where the 8350 is faster the 2500k isnt far behind - whereas in programs/games that are more lightly threaded the 2500k is a lot faster.

I do like the 8350, and its great on my system where I do lots of mutlithreaded applications and virtual machines, but for a gaming system (like the OP is asking about), the 2500k would be my choice 100%.

That's right, if the OP chose the 8350 he'll be stuck with the 9590 which is a very power hungry chip(220w). choosing the i5 will allow for a better upgrade
