I have 2 sticks of hyperx 4gb ram.

One is hyperx black and one is hyperx red. Both have 1600mhz. Both running on xmp profiles and dual channel mode.

So my question would be, what is the difference between these? IS it just the paint job?

Thanks

Solution
Yes both of them are exactly the same. The only difference is paint on the heat sink. Yes you can run them in dual channel mode ( always recommended ) and try the XMP. Be forewarned though not all systems will run properly on the XMP settings. Mine changes 1 setting different and my system wont boot But manually setting all others to what XMP has, except that one, and I boot fine. So try XMP and see what happens. If it runs and Passes Memtest86+ for 11 passes it is 100% stable and you are good to go. :)

Hi both have the same part number

KHX1600C9D3/4GX

But Serial number varies :)

Packages are exactly the same except few numbers in the back.

If they are both the same model number then there is no difference in chips. They run at the same speed and voltages.

break down of Kingston's numbering code

K Kingston
H Hyper
X "X"
1600 Maximum Guaranteed Speed
C9 CAS Timing
D3 DDR Version, In this case it is DDR3 but for DDR2 it would be D2.
/ Divider for sets. separates model number and GB amount and heat sink types.
4G 4GB. Total GB In The Set
X the type of heat sink added. This will change due to a different 'Type" of heat sink not color.

Don't know whether I should this :( So is it exactly the same ? Is it just the paint job which differ? So can I run them on dual channel with xmp active?

Thanks btw You were amazing on helping me :)

And mate do you think Serial number doesn't matter at all?

Thanks and that would be my last question :)

The serial numbers, just like a vehicles VIN number ( Vehicle Identification Number ), identify the module itself. It identifies when that chip was made in relation to other chips. Example: Serial number: 10001 was made just before 10002 and 2 before 10003. Each module gets 1 number after the one before it. Some of the numbers can designate the plant it was assembled in. Each piece has a different serial number.

So do the serial numbers matter? No they do not matter.

Thanks so much. I was going to change my red ram to a black one with my friend and you luckily stopped me mate. Actually since everything is same it won't matter. My mobo is gigabyte z97x gaming 3 which is red and black so the build won't look messy with 2 colours LOL. Thnaks again mate :)

Btw nice system you have :)
