Hello guys! I'm trying to upgrade my old HP desktop (HP Pavillion a6257c), so i just got me a new processor Core 2 DUO E6700, wich is the best i can get for that old lady, a new power supply 500W, new memories and a new graphics card (EVGA GTX 750ti SC), but unfortunatly, i was told that my moterboard won't use all the strength that this card delivers (PCi Express 16 x 1.1). Did a made a mistake by buying this card for this old desktop? If yes, what card could i use?
Thanks everybody!

some models of store bought computers [dell.hp,acer,ect..] may come with a ''locked or fixed'' bios and may not allow you to change certain hardware as a video card.. this is done to protect them from undue warranty claims and refunds .this is not done to hurt you but to protect them. you really need to see if that upgrade has been proven to work in your model first before you invest money in it .. there are a lot of these threads here at toms to look at some models will allow upgrades and some dont.. and a lot of guys here say ya ya ya when is really no no no...it would be sad you spent $200 on a card that wount post after you installed it as most find out. then get told its your psu and you spend more and end up right back where you are now, but its up to you good luck..

you got to know the the boards in these computers are not like the ones we use to do custom builds witch are open to upgrading with in the boards compatibly . the bios is custom made for there design and just for the parts they authorize to be used on there computers there only guaranteed to work as is out of the box as you bought it ,..

look up the threads here at prebuilts with failed gpu upgrades weather its old or new

read all I said in this one

Hello junkeymonkey, and thanks for replying!
Well, like i said earlier, it's now, 'cause i already bought the card... seems that i should have asked that before spending my money wrong.
I'm not going to sell it, i got it for a really good price, i'm just wondering if it's going to work or not... i'm just afraid of damaging the graphics card or even my computer by trying to use this baby on that old piece of crap... can't afford a better motherboard by now. Don't know what to do. Don't know if it's going to work or not, even if it doesn't deliver all her goodies, i would be fine as long as i can have some better quality images and renders on 3D Autocad...
Really don't know what to do now...

you got to look around hard on this there may be something missed it depends on model to model I see guys say they got it to work prebuilts are funny and I never recommend upgrades as this for them way too much miss then hit like I say in my disclaimer there only guaranteed to work as is as sold by hp or whoever whit what came on them from hp that's all the rest is at own risk

its hard to find a thread anywhere that some one says ya I put this card in and it works 100% no issues then if they do they don't sem to explain it out for folks to read and try to see if it helps them

I would of thought that 750 would of been low powered enough to work but I guess that 50-50

I was looking at the hp link you posted and read the gpu part and seen this ---

•Also supports PCI Express x16 graphics cards* see that asterisk above the tail end of card ??? like theres some kind of footnote for this that's not stated
so what does it mean??? you see its left up in the air to me likem you may install one but it may not work???

If the bios is heavily locked down and won't allow use of PCIe graphics - you simply won't be able to use the card. I am 99.9% sure that trying to use it will not damage anything (unless you physically damage something when installing the card).

Don't stress over the transfer rate of PCIe 1.1 vs 2.0. I have seen lots of graphics card tests when they compare 2.0 x 16 to 2.0 x8 in single or multi-gpu systems and have found virtually no difference.
PCIe 2.0 doubles the rate of 1.1. so 1.1 x 16 is virtually equal in bandwidth to 2.0 x 8 (and as 2.0x8 performs virtually on par with 2.0x16)

ya that's all good but you don't know what the pci-e slot is powered to .. is it at the full atx 75w or set to 45w or 25w ???
see you don't know what its got hp controls this and sets it to what they feel it should be as I said these boards DONT have to meet full atx standard witch I think states pci-e watts are from 25w to 75w max

''All sizes of ×16 cards are initially 25 W; like ×1 cards, half-height cards are limited to this number while full-height cards may increase their power after configuration. They can use up to 75 W (3.3 V × 3 A + 12 V × 5.5 A), though the specification demands that the higher-power configuration be used for graphics cards only, while cards of other purposes are to remain at 25 W.[10][11]

so ya they give you a pci-e x16 but it don't have to give you 75w on it

Yeah, i just think the same!!! It's really up in the air right there! I also found this info at wikipedia abot the maximum power delivery of the PCI Express cards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express#Power) and as it says, it delivers a maximum of 75W, and the GTX 750 ti SC consumes only 60 W... That's a relief at least, but it doesn't mean at the same time that it's gonna work nice and right. I'm gonna try the damn thing, i'll tell you if it works... now, i'm still not sure how the transfer rate will behave on my PCI Express slot. x 16 1.1 - it says on the requirements - "PCI Express, PCI Express 2.0 or PCI Express 3.0 compliant motherboard with one graphics slot." (http://www.evga.com/products/Specs/GPU.aspx?pn=7eac3c86-1a83-4df9-8a8b-5c55264d2bd0). I hope everything works fine.
Gonna try save me some money from now on... get me a more decent motherboard... a year from now... =)

I'm here wondering, could i change the bios settings, like "reseting" it from factory-custom mode (if it's not set let's say for the total maximum output power delivery of 75W)?
If yes, how it's done? F-10 after starting the computer? Is it possible to control such kind of settings?

Am i right on this or i just sound crazy here??? Don't know much about these things guys, sorry...
