The Z97 supports Intel "Broadwell" 5th generation chips, so if you were to upgrade, it would be less hassle (http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/pc-upgrades/3539137/z97-vs-z87-which-motherboard-should-i-buy/)

I'll create a new build without the 970. Do you plan on overclocking? And do you have a preference between AMD and NVIDIA?

Overclocking components is much safer now than it was a few years ago. Many manufacturers have products that are even intended for overclocking such as Intel's CPUs ending with K (e.g. i5-4690k).

I personally don't overclock, because I don't need it, but its an excellent way to get extra performance out of your hardware. It's best to make sure you understand everything about overclocking and hardware temperatures before trying it yourself.

Most people from what I've read recommend the Z97 over the Z87 for new builds (http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2147780/asus-z97-z87-confused.html)

EDIT: I just reread your original post. Are you only looking for a GPU?
