I am trying to overclock my Intel core 2 quad q9550 cpu from 2.8 to 3.4 GHz but im failing at it.

I have read many guides and what not and also the overclocking manual of the cpu but every time i try to overclock my computer reboots and goes back to default clock speed. I have also tried diffrent clock speeds and voltages for my cpu but the same thing happens. Any ideas what to do?

Oh well, that motherboard will be pretty bad for overclocking that chip. Look at trying to overclock to 350Mhz fsb my exerience with a similar board a g31-es2l which had fsb limits of around 360Mhz and the two boards are virtually the same excet for ram support. This really sucks for you due to the chip already running a default fsb of 333Mhz.
Hello... Are you " SAVE Setting and EXIT " in your BIO's? Your FSB setting will also affect your RAM stick speed settings... so you need to DOWN CLock your Ram to Overclock you CPU... Your Ram is not as OverClockable as your CPU is... And if your MB doesn't like the RAM settings, it will revert back your FSB for your RAM to Boot good.
What is your Ram models/type you are using?

Hi, Yes i am saving the settings before i exit, Not really sure where to change ram speeds as i cant see it in my bios options. Is ram speed the frequency of it? If i is it is set to 800MHz i think and its not letting me change it . Im using 4gbs ddr2.

Hello... Depending on your MB Bios and Brand/Model... you might not have a option for it... But you need to set your RAM for 800 speed or Below while your CPU is Overclocked.
Sometimes there is secret key to UN-lock your RAM speed/settings screens. Google a overclockers site that is referenced to your MB.
1) Can you manually set your RAM to 667? , Save and exit?
2) Shut off any AUTO configuation settings for your RAM/BIO's ? do you have a Bio's Manual Control setting for your RAM setting? Check your MB PDF/Manual for this.
3) Start at 2.9ghz then 3.0 ghz...etc and watch what your MB reports as your RAM speed too understand the relationship... it is simple math FSB x CPU multiplier... Your RAM speed will follow the FSB settings... and there will be a point where your RAM will not be able to keep up... and BOOT failure.
4) list your MB/BIos band/Model.
