I was wondering what kind of hardware for the money I could get in order to battle the PS4/XONE, next gen consoles in general. The system needs to be small, similar to the two consoles and in the same price range. Not more than £400. It needs to be able to handle most games at 1080P 60 FPS with tweaked settings of course. Thanks

This is a microATX build which will suit your needs:
http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/JackalCOB/saved/NL4Pxr

You can google benchmarks for the GTX 750Ti to see if it meets the standards you want, but it represents great value for money, especially in an inexpensive build. Also the unlocked Pentium processor is good for overclocking if you feel it doesn't have enough oomph.
Just make sure you do a bit of research, tweak the build I've linked, but it is a good place for you to start to get an idea of what you can get for the same price as a console :)

You cannot overclock with that board unless it's a ASUS ^~^, just letting you know.

Taken the liberty of editing the person's above List,

I changed out the crappy Tier 3 CX PSU for a Tier 1 PSU :).

I got you a higher end card and a board that supports the G3258 and overclocking :).

And also I got you a CPU cooler that fit's in your case :)

This is what I could get you, now, it's 100 over, but beats the SNOT out of the Consoles and has SO MUCH upgrade potential to beat the Snot out of XBOX and PS4 for years to come.

Oops, my bad :p what board would you suggest instead? Assuming of course that Ace wants to OC.

a H97 and aZ97 can overclock that CPU,

ASUS managed to allow some of their boards to OC the G3258, i do not remember them, but it's not that hard to look up which boards do :)

Sweet, thanks for the info :) i've updated the parts list. it's a little bit over budget, but it's looking like quite a nice little build

That build is at 322 and you have a 380 watt PSU. You will be straining your PC's PSU and it will lessen your PSU life span, I recommend atleast 500 watts to give some leeway for the PSU and to not strain it to much.

EDIT: whoops. That was from me XD. Damn didn't notice lol, my fault, but it's good to learn from people's mistakes :)

Thank you guys. The thing is I can't spend more than £400. As you can see from the build I currently have(read signature) it can already exceed the console power by a lot, so what I'm really looking for is something small, cheap, and powerful enough to game at 1680*1050 or 1080p in the future. I was thinking of this build:

PCPartPicker part list: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/XM4VLk
Price breakdown by merchant: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/XM4VLk/by_merchant/

Case: Aerocool Qs-101 Micro-ATX Case - Black
CPU: Intel Pentium G3258 3.2GHz Dual-Core Processor (£47.98 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: Asus B85M-G Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (£49.20 @ Scan.co.uk)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£69.00 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (£63.00 @ Amazon UK)
Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 270 2GB Double Dissipation Video Card (£107.12 @ Scan.co.uk)
Power Supply: Silverstone 450W 80+ Bronze Certified SFX Power Supply (£66.75 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £403.05

I know it's better to have an H97/Z97 board to OC, but I'm only planning to take the G3258 up to 4.0 GHz and was thinking of using a low profile CPU cooler such as the Noctua NH-L9i. Also I was wondering whether the R9 270X would bottleneck the stock G3258.

If so, then I recommend you message the people you are buying the board to make sure the B85 is up to date on the bios to use haswell refresh CPUs. Everything seems great.

You mean the shop from where I'm buying the board or get in contact with Asus directly?

If they just have the board tell them to flash bios to latest or of it's already up to date, i suggest you opt out that case for a bigger one to support aftermarket cooling, if not then just get a I3 4330 or I5 4660 to save some time as you will not need to overclock and you will be able to handle the card without overclockimg.

Edit, just saw that cooler, while it's great it won't get you the overclockimg you want... It's basically meant to just cool, enter than stock.
