I need an OS that is free and suitable for running on a machine with the following specifications:

  • 2.2GHz Pentium 4 Processor
    20GB HDD
    256MB of RAM
    (Ergo Ensis M Series)
I'm going to replace an existing XP install on it and as it's quite an old laptop, I'm not planning to upgrade any of it. The OS needs to have available drivers for Ralink USB wi-fi adapters ideally. It needs to have a GUI for my not so technically savvy family.

Any suggestions or recommendations? Thanks

Please do not ever recommend old versions of Linux. There is no reason to use outdated software.

MetaSysta: Only 256MB of ram is very limiting!
Checkout Lubuntu (or something like puppy linux if you need even lighter RAM usage), those will run well on older hardware and be friendly towards someone coming from windows.

Most Railink drivers will work out of the Box on *buntu.

I put Lubuntu on an older Dell Mini laptop (it has better specs than what you mentioned, but still didnt have that much), and it ran surprisingly quickly, especially compared to the sluggish Windows 7. It's work looking into, although more RAM in general might be advisable if possible
